Meet Lisa Nordquist,
Your Grey Monkey Gym Coach
I am a Motivational Interviewing and CORE Dynamics Coach with a degree in Psychology, a Mayo Clinic Health & Wellness Coach certification, AND also a mother of 13 & 15 year old girls.
When my oldest daughter was in 4th grade, my parenting problems began. We had always had a more challenging relationship, but the power struggles ramped up to a new level with resistance to school and homework, attitude emissions, and obvious resentment.
For me this was tough because I had taken parenting classes, signed up for “First 5” training, and read book after book as a new mom--wanting so badly to do this parenting thing well. I was also an authoritative parent, believing in lots of love, encouragement, and very clear boundaries that put my husband and I in control.
This worked great . . . until my girls hit puberty! That’s when I decided to seek deeper and more personalized help with a therapist. During this process, I discovered what was lacking in my parenting style and what I needed to do differently, which took me down a road of exploration and learning.
I learned that though I love my children deeply and was doing the best I could, my approach with my tween needed to change. It lacked empathy, validation, interest, and was building a bigger wall between us than I could imagine. It was also hurting my girls’ self-confidence, self-awareness, and ability to communicate, listen to others, and resolve conflict.
I took what I learned in my years studying and experimenting, formal trainings and certification programs and applied it in our house. And, it worked--FABULOUSLY! Power struggles are gone, listening and empathy are in-tact (in both directions), and I don’t have to work as hard to maintain control or make them do anything--homework, cleaning the cat box, sweeping the floor. (If it’s not done, I get “Sorry. I’ll do it now.” --No shit!) They are both now highly motivated in school and work out their own disagreements with the techniques they learned from my interactions with them.
It’s not me being some super mom--I’m not perfect or magic. It’s these techniques and approach that works magic. I am sharing them with you in this workshop, where you will get to experience them yourself.
It’s a game changer.
